Professional Background / Experience
- Completed a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at La Trobe University, Melbourne, prior to medicine, bringing a unique multidisciplinary lens to psychiatric practice.
- Medical degree completed at the University of Notre Dame, Sydney.
- Master of Psychiatry completed at the University of Melbourne.
- Specialist psychiatry training undertaken predominantly through Royal Melbourne Hospital Mental Health Services, across a diverse range of settings including acute adult psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and psychiatry of old age.
- Completed specialised rotations at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service, the Hospital Outreach Post-Suicidal Engagement (HOPE) Program, an Open Dialogue service, and the Royal Women’s Hospital.
- This breadth of experience informs a holistic and nuanced approach to women’s mental health across all life stages.
Professional Interests
Shelley has a particular interest in women’s mental health across the lifespan. Her practice is collaborative and dialogically informed, with an emphasis on shared decision-making and holding multiple perspectives.
Areas of particular interest and expertise include:
- Perinatal mental health, including preconception, pregnancy and the postnatal period.
- Attachment, bonding and the transition to parenthood.
- Grief and loss, including perinatal loss and infertility.
- Depression, anxiety and other high prevalence mental health disorders in women.
- Trauma and its relational impact, particularly as it presents in women’s mental health contexts.
- The hormonal aspects of women’s mental health, including perimenopause and premenstrual mood disorders.
- Affirming care for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
- Neurodivergent presentations in women, including ADHD and autism, with a particular interest in late or missed diagnosis and its impact on mental health and identity.
Treatments Offered
- Psychodynamic psychotherapy, drawing on mentalisation-based and CAT-informed principles to support insight, self-understanding and relational wellbeing.
- Evidence-based psychological therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) and Supportive Therapy.
- Mindfulness-based approaches integrated into individual therapy.
- Medication review and management, with a focus on psychotropic safety across the reproductive lifespan, including pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Personal Interests Outside of Work
Outside of work, Shelley is a busy mum to two young children and two dogs. She loves the water, travelling and exploring new places with her family.
