Professional Background/Experience
- Studied Medicine at the Monash University Medical School.
- Internship and residency in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics and Psychiatry.
- Specialist Psychiatric training at the Alfred Hospital Melbourne.
- Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist at the Alfred Hospital.
- Perinatal (Mother-Baby) Psychiatrist at the Albert Road Clinic with further focus on Early Parenting Programs leading to developing interventions, procedures and protocols in those facilities as well as assisting with the expansion of the Masada Mother Baby Services to its current form.
- This led to the foundation of the NEST philosophy of perinatal healthcare.
- In more recent years Dr Margis has extended his expertise in Women's Mental Health to also focus on ADHD in Women and Perimenopause Mental Health as well as Perinatal Psychiatry.
Professional Interests
- All aspects of Perinatal Psychiatry including, emotional hardships of preconception (including fertility treatment), and the antenatal and postnatal periods.
- Associated perinatal issues including relationship difficulties and perinatal loss and grief.
- Particular interest in ensuring early detection and intervention for postnatal depression and anxiety as well as difficulty with transition to parenthood without psychiatric illness.
- Experienced in an extensive range of Psychotherapeutic (talking therapy) approaches including, supportive, cognitive-behavioural, interpersonal and psychodynamic.
- Also expert in Pharmacological (medication) interventions when required – including during pregnancy and while breast-feeding.
- ADHD Assessment and Treatment in Women.
- Mental Health and the Perimenopause
- Dr. Margis is renowned for having a highly collaborative approach with his patients regarding choice of treatment empowering them to be central to the decision making process.
Dr. Margis has served as a Board Member of the Mercy Health Foundation and the Melbourne Theatre Foundation.
Personal Interests Outside of Work
When not at work Dr. Margis spends time with his wife and children. He loves to Snow ski and relax on the Mornington Peninsula.
